This act of worship, based with extracts from the Methodist Covenant Service, has been prepared for you by Rev Christine Fox to use at home. Within this service we will say a prayer recommitting ourselves to God. Covenant service is renewing our response to God’s covenant of love. We love God because God first loved us. *Prayer Glory to the God of Love, you created us; you continually preserve and sustain us; you love us with an everlasting love you give us the light of the knowledge of your glory in the face of Jesus Christ. Blessèd be God for ever Glory to you, Lord Jesus, You were rich, but became poor for our sake, you were tempted as we are, yet without sin, you preached the good news of the kingdom and were obedient to death, even death on a cross. You were raised from death and are alive forever. You sit at God’s right hand in glory and will come again to judge us. Blessèd be God for ever Glory to you, Holy Spirit, the Lord, the Giver of Life. By you we are born into the family of God and made members of the body of Christ. Your witness confirms us; your wisdom teaches us; your power enables us. You will do for us more than we can ask or think. Blessèd be God for ever To the one God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, be praise and glory for ever. Amen. StF 489 all I once held dear. Words by Charles Wesley Tune: Dundee (French) *Covenant God made a covenant with the people of Israel, calling them to be a holy nation, chosen to bear witness to his steadfast love by finding delight in the law. The covenant was renewed in Jesus Christ our Lord, in his life, work, death and resurrection. In him all people may be set free from sin and its power, and united in love and obedience. In this covenant God promises us new life in Christ. For our part we promise to live no longer for ourselves but for God. We meet today, as generations before us have done, to renew the covenant which bound them and binds us to God. Let us, then, humbly seek forgiveness for the sin by which we have denied God’s claim on us. *Prayers of Intercession As we have entered this covenant not for ourselves alone, but as God’s servants and witnesses, let us pray for the Church and for the world. Loving God, hear us as we pray for your holy catholic Church: make us all one, that the world may believe. Inspire and lead all who govern and hold authority in the nations of the world: establish justice and peace among all people. Have compassion on all who suffer from any sickness, grief or trouble: deliver them from their distress. We praise you for all your saints who have entered your eternal glory: bring us all to share in your heavenly kingdom. Let us pray in silence for our own needs and for those of others... Silence Lord our God, you have helped us by your grace to make these prayers, and you have promised through Christ our Lord that when two or three agree in his name you will grant what they ask. Answer now your servants’ prayers according to their needs; in this world grant that we may truly know you, and in the world to come graciously give us eternal life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. *Covenant prayer I am no longer my own but yours. Your will, not mine, be done in all things, wherever you may place me, in all that I do and in all that I may endure; when there is work for me and when there is none; when I am troubled and when I am at peace. Your will be done when I am valued and when I am disregarded; when I find fulfilment and when it is lacking; when I have all things, and when I have nothing. I willingly offer all I have and am to serve you, as and where you choose. Glorious and blessèd God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, you are mine and I am yours. May it be so for ever. Let this covenant now made on earth be fulfilled in heaven. Amen. The Lord’s Prayer Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your Name. Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours. Now and for ever. Amen StF 663 I the Lord of sea and sky. Everingham Music. Daniel L. We invite you to spend a few moments with God, knowing that other people across the Methodist Connexion are sharing this act of worship with you. StF 101 Before the world began John L. Bell (b. 1949) and Graham Maule (b. 1958) Prayer As your people, O God, we come to give you thanks and praise. You reveal yourself to us in creation, in the life, death and rising of Jesus and in the continuing work of the Spirit in our lives. We hear and reflect on your self-revelation in the life of Jesus, and of the impact his life had on those around him. We know that we do not always live up to the challenge of Jesus’s story. So, in silence, we reflect on our failings as individuals, on our failings as a church and on our failings as a society. Silence We know that in Jesus God says to us ‘Your sins are forgiven. Living God, in Christ you make all things new. Transform the poverty of our nature by the riches of your grace, and in the renewal of our lives make known your heavenly glory; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. (MWB collect for the day) Reading from the Old Testament Isaiah 62.1-5 Gospel Reading: John 2.1-11 Time to Reflect In today’s gospel reading Jesus and his disciples find time to join his mother for a celebratory event. When the crisis emerges, he is reluctant to help but the end result is, it seems, excellent wine. It is a sign (v11). It is striking that Jesus’ first recorded ‘sign’ in John’s gospel is about domestic embarrassment, when others are typically about life-changing conditions (think of Bartimaeus or Lazarus). This is a story about the way God is revealed in Jesus, a central theme of the Sundays after Epiphany. Here, and elsewhere, a feature of God’s self-revelation in Jesus seems to be exuberant generosity. Perhaps the messages for us include the notion that it is not for us to judge what God can or should do for us. God is not bound by what we think is proper, or for that matter by what we think is fair. We do not and cannot control God. God’s good gifts are sometimes unexpected and beyond our comprehension. Another message could be about responding in the moment to the need we can see. That certainly seems to be what Jesus did at this wedding in Cana. Even though his hour had not yet come (v4), he responded to the host’s need and to his mother’s plea. What might be our response to God’s unexpected generosity? Take a time to sit quietly A time of prayer Let us pray for the church and the world. For the church around the world in uncertain times. With the Methodist Prayer Handbook on day 16 especially for the Church of Bangladesh, the Church of Pakistan, and the Methodist Church in Sri Lanka and for the Methodist Church in Ireland. For the congregations we know. That all our words and actions may accord with God’s will for us and for all people. For the world, for all in positions of power and influence, . that they may strive for justice and for peace. For our own country and neighbourhood. For those in need, for those fleeing conflict, for prisoners, for those who are sick or awaiting diagnosis or treatment. For those know to us. Draw near to all in need with your saving love and bring healing and hope. For ourselves that we may follow the example of all your saints and of those who brought us to faith. . Bring us with them into the fullness of your eternal joy. Lord’s Prayer Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your Name. Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. When Jesus was baptized in the Jordan and the Holy Spirit descended upon him, he knew he was loved by God his Father. Let each one of us know and feel the warmth of God’s love today. StF 20 Be still for the presence of the Lord. Music & Words: David J. Evans. Sung by Matt Beckingham. Prayer Loving God, You knew us by name long before we heard your call. Your welcome and your love were always there and always will be. May we always be secure in that knowledge and be willing to follow where you lead us. Thank you that we can come to you in prayer and speak with you as a friend, that we can open our hearts to you and know that you are there to listen and understand. Our lives are open to your gaze – you see the bad as well as the good, our doubts as well as our faith, our sorrows as well as our joys, our despair as well as our hope. We bring you our anger as well as our peace, the hatred as well as the love, the confusion as well as the certainty, the fear as well as the trust. All of these exacerbated by the ongoing pandemic around us leave us feeling lost and exhausted. Forgive us for doubting you, loving God, for wanting short cuts, instant results and seeking gratification elsewhere. Help us to be truthful to ourselves and to you so that we can be immersed in the love which only you can give – love which frees us to live as you would have us live and be the people you want us to be. Hear our prayer, loving God, in the name of Jesus, your dear son. Amen. May we always know that by your Grace we are forgiven, in your peace our lives are lived. By your touch we know healing, in your strength we are made whole. Thanks be to God. Amen Lord’s Prayer Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your Name. Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours. Now and for ever. Sung by members of the Oxford Methodist Circuit. Message StF 558 Lord, you have come to the seashore. Congregational singing recorded at South Cliff Methodist Church Prayers for others Gracious and loving God, our creator, who knew each one of us from conception to our birth. We give thanks for the gift of baptism and for parents and Godparents and others who have given Christian teaching to many of us so that we have come to know you and to journey with you. Gracious God, immerse all people in your love today. We pray for your church throughout the world as we consider the effects of the pandemic on so many Christians. We remember especially those Christians in parts of the world where both persecution and poverty are a combined threat and ask your blessing upon them. We give thanks that, despite church closures and difficulties, modern technology has allowed worship both to continue and to reach out to others far outside of our church buildings in virtual environments. We are thankful, too, for all those who have used their skills to draw us close to you and to each other in these new ways. Gracious God, immerse all people in your love today. We pray for this world which seems so troubled. Forgive us that we have failed to care for this amazing planet of your creation. We pray for all those who are striving to find ways to solve the problems caused by global warming and pollution and ask your guidance as we each individually seek to change our own behaviour and lifestyles in the knowledge that we are a part of the problem. We pray for countries that continue to be affected by conflict, war, and terrorism, thinking especially of Afghanistan and the Yemen at this time. We pray for leaders, governments, and politicians throughout the world that they may lead with honesty and integrity, and rule without prejudice and with justice and fairness for all people whatever their race, colour or creed. Gracious God, immerse all people in your love today. Finally, we pray for ourselves. Help us to share your love with all who need it. We pray for those who are frail, those who are sick and suffering, for refugees and those who have no home to go to. We think of doctors, nurses, carers and all hospital workers as they continue to struggle with staff shortages and long hours due to the pandemic. We pray that communities around where they work will support them and do all they can to minimize risk of further spread of the virus. We also give thanks and pray for all who continue to provide our public services during these difficult times – the shop workers, refuse collectors, bus and taxi drivers. We pray, too, for our young people and all those who teach them as they return to schools, colleges, and universities. Uphold and strengthen them all as they face the challenges ahead. Gracious God, immerse all people in your love today. In the name of your dear son, Jesus, who is our rock, our friend, our Saviour, and our guide. Amen StF 673 Will you come and follow me. Holy Spirit, go with us into the world. Re-source us with your power and your presence. Father, help us to know your love, and that we are your beloved sons and daughters. Lord Jesus Christ, help us to learn from you, and to follow your example, that we may share your love with everyone we meet. Amen |
